The online Journal of Accountancy recently published “125 Technology Quick Tips,” including tips from basic short-cuts when using Word to tips for the iPad and those for good websites. We thought we would include some of the relevant ones here as a bundle of little but useful ideas.

For useful website information, here are some good sites:

  1. The article cited http://www.tinyurl.com as a reliable site for shortening a link when needed. We use this site when tweeting and need all limited space for the tweet. There are other sites like tinyurl but this is one of the best.
  2. A useful website for news on technology, along with innovative ideas is http://www.ted.com. It offers many presentations from around the world.
  3. As for video conferencing, it’s still hard to beat Skype. Check it out, and it’s free.
  4. http://www.surveymonkey.com is a great resource for creating a survey.

We have given tips for the iPad before on our blog, but below are a few more interesting ones:

  1. Here are some keyboard shortcuts for the iPad: when typing, swiping up on the comma key inserts an apostrophe; swiping on a period key inserts a quotation; holding the hypen key inserts em-dashes or bullets; holding the dollar sign key inserts different currency symbols.
  2. For syncing files to your iPad, Dropbox is a good choice. Another option, if you are using gmail, is to have documents in Google Docs, which can be accessed anywhere.
  3. Here is a good tip if you have highly sensitive data on your iPad. Enable the Erase Data setting by selecting Settings, then General, then Passcode Lock, then Erase Data will erase data if someone tries to input a false password ten times consecutively.
