Recently, a major security breach made headlines because it was a security company that suffered the breach. LastPass,  a popular security Password Manager program suffered the breach after cyber criminals obtained copies of customers’ passwords, exposing their online information (see NYT .) We often recommend Password Managers as a level of security when dealing online with apps and websites. A Password Manager stores the user’s names and passwords for sites and apps they use.

We always stress to our clients, however, that Password Managers are good, but you cannot be complacent. It is key that you use MFA, multi-factor authentication, which generates a temporary code that must be entered along with your user name and password. Most often, you will receive an email or text with a code to enter.

Another point to remember is to ensure that all critical data is saved on the server or on a cloud service like OneDrive or DropBox and that it is backed up. This is a necessity that cannot be overlooked.

Lastly, create a complex and unique password for every account. While it is tempting to re-use the same password, it really leaves you vulnerable to a security breach. LastPass ensured customers that most information was probably safe and that most sensitive information was encrypted, which would prevent hackers from receiving the most critical information, like being able to log into your bank account. Still, it is recommended for all LastPass users to change all of their passwords, a practice that is good for everyone to do periodically.
