This week, Fox news published an informative article (January 26, 2012, FoxNews.com) on the state of cyber security. The popular security product, Symantec, had to advise customers to disable one of its products after hackers had stolen underlying code powering the software. The theft occured in 2006 and recent disclosures from the company revealed a more significiant risk than was initially reported.

The article suggested steps to greater IT protection.

  • Most notable, is the advice to refrain from using a “suite” of security protection from any one software manufacturer. It’s best to mix up your security products for layers of protection. At Waytek, we always advise on multi-layered security.
  • As far as passwords, the best protection is a password manager or system that changes and encrypts passwords automatically, an important feature that we strongly encourage and offer on our website.
  • Another point of advice is to run computers in “Administrator” mode, not “User mode.” Then, malware will not install automaticaly.
  • If businesses deploy applicaton “white listing,” unauthorized malware wil be prevented from running on computers.
